Firefighters were called to action after a report of a house fire in Carlisle.

It happened t about 3am on Saturday morning at a house on Wigton Road.

Crews from both Carlisle stations and one from Longtown rushed to the fire.

A spokesman for Cumbria Fire and Rescue said: "While in attendance, it became apparent that there was a fire to the rear of the property and smoke logging throughout.

"There were concerns that there may be people trapped inside.

"Crews offensively tackled the blaze using four breathing apparatus, two hosereel jets, two thermal imaging cameras, small tools and a positive pressure ventilation fan.

"We quickly established that the property was unoccupied, and extinguished the fire.

"Crews then helped clear smoke from the neighbouring two properties, who we had evacuated.

"Our fire investigation findings ascertained that the fires most likely cause, was a smouldering fire in an upstairs light fitting, which filled an external store cupboard with fire gasses, and when the fire broke through the floor, it caused a fire gas ignition, with enough force to blow the door off the store cupboard."

Nobody was injured at this injured, and crews were in attendance for about two hours.
