One devoted team used 2020's extra day to take a break from their typical work – and went on a litter pick instead.
A group from the National Trust West Lakes, made up of rangers, visitor and office staff, spent their leap day cleaning up the area.
And Seascale beach has never looked so clean, as the team collected a mammoth amount of rubbish during their blustery and rain-filled litter pick.
Everything from a single wellington boot, flip-flop, and trainer to an oil-covered rubber duck, a bicycle and a car tyre was collected, along with hundreds of plastic bottle caps – with their accompanying bottles "most likely full of water on the sea floor".
Every day the West Lakes team look after 39,000 acres of woodlands, rivers, paths, fells, tarns and lakes to conserve the nature that call it home.
They also urged everyone to respect nature by; sticking to fell paths, bringing litter home and letting dandelions grow in gardens to provide plenty of food for bees and other pollinators to enjoy in the spring.
