The Met Office is predicting strong winds, sunshine and showers this weekend as Storm Jorge hits Cumbria.

Speaking about Carlisle's weather today, forecaster Marco Petagna said: "This morning we have seen sun and a few showers in the last couple of hours. We will see sunshine and showers for much of the afternoon. After 3pm/4pm we could see showers merging, which will bring larger outbreaks of rain – turning to sleet in places.

"There will be blustery winds, gale force in places. It will feel quite cold out and about. Showers will keep coming and going for a while this evening. At the latter stages of the evening the showers will start to fade away. They will start again during the early hours - between 2am and 4am.

"They will start to ease towards the morning.

"Overnight will be blustery with the risk of gales and it will be quite a cold night which may bring frost and ice first thing."

For Sunday, he is predicting: "Sunday will be a better day, bright and windy to start with, with one or two showers which will be few and far between.

“The strong winds become calmer and temperatures will be better than Saturday, with highs of six degrees. There will be a bit more sunshine and without the strong winds it won’t feel quite as cold.”
