Registration is now open for what promises to be a truly spectacular event.

The Carlisle Lantern Walk, organised by Eden Valley Hospice, will light up the city with a sea of blue and orange lanterns this June.

The first event of its kind in the city, the hospice will be holding the fundraising event on Friday June 5.

Registration for taking part in the event is now open.

Starting at 9pm, there will be two routes for participants to take.

Leaving from Carlisle Racecourse, participants will take either a two mile or a six mile route, holding aloft a blue or an orange lantern in memory of a loved one - or just in support of good works done by the hospice.

Providing care for adults and children with life-limiting illnesses from across north Cumbria, Eden Valley Hospice is based off Durdar Road on the southern edge of Carlisle.

The children’s hospice, Jigsaw, is also housed on the same site.

A registered charity, Eden Valley Hospice is reliant on donations and fundraising to keep it going.

Community and events fundraiser Sam Johnston said they were hoping to get up to 1,000 people signed up for the event.

“It’s an ambitious target”, Sam said, “but given that this is one of our major fundraising events of the year, we hope we can make a really strong success of it.

“We’ve done midnight walks in the past - this event is going to be somewhat similar but we’re really looking forward to see the addition of the lanterns.

“This is the first time we’re doing, and the first event of its kind in Carlisle.”

He said that being one of the hospice’s major fundraising events for 2020, there was a hope that “tens of thousands” can be raised.

“In total, the hospice needs to raise about £4m a year to run all our services,” Sam said.

“But it’s not just about the money raised.

“It’s nice to see at this sort of event that the good work carried out by the hospice is celebrated by our community.”
