A COMMUNITY run swimming pool is putting out feelers for furniture after they used all their money in refurbishments.

Greystoke Pool, on Church Road, in Penrith, has undergone a £150,000 revamp to upgrade its cafe, kitchen and changing rooms.

But the coffers have been emptied by the time it came to buy the most important aspect of cafe culture - chairs and tables for customers to take a pew.

Now the volunteers that run the outdoor pool have asked if people could spare chairs and tables so they could mix and match to get a vintage look.

Stephen Nicol, chairman of Greystoke and District Sports Association, which runs the pool, said: "We have just completed the refurb but all the money that we had for it has been used up.

"We like to get some good furniture for when we open up in May, we have been looking to get some pre-loved furniture for the cafe so we've put some feelers out.

"We've had a few responses so far.

"The previous facilities that we had were very tired with 20 plus years of use - we desperately needed more modern facilities.

"The cafe is larger so is able to accommodate more people

"We started with a grant from the Sports Council, we have always been been a community run organisation which relies on volunteers.

The £150,000 project was made possible through a number of grants which included £94,000 from the Cumbrian Fells and Dales Leader Programme, £27,000 from the Cumbria Waste Management Environment Trust.

There were also grants from the Hadfield Trust and the Pride in Penrith Lottery plus volunteers ran a series of fundraising events.

Stephen added that once the cafe is complete there are a number of other projects including getting a new canopy for the entrance to the pool.

He also said that volunteers would be appreciated to get the pool ready for the new season.

Volunteers that run the pool have been running a number of fundraising campaigns to help keep the pool going.

This includes a Buy a Brick campaign where local residents and local businesses can sponsor the new pool buildings and get their name displayed inside the pool.

The next fundraising event for the pool is the Greystoke 10k Trail Run 2020, which will take place on Sunday, March 8.

Race HQ is Greystoke Village Hall where there will be free parking, toilets, bag drop, changing facilities and light refreshments.

It starts at 10.30am in front of the Castle.

Greystoke Pool is open from May to September and at various times on weekday and weekends.Single entry prices range from £1.50 to £4.
