New data shows that Carlisle is the second-hardest place in the country in which to pass a driving test.

Figures from the Driving Vehicle Standards Agency (DVSA) show that only Rochdale in Greater Manchester has a lower pass rate than Carlisle.

Just 31.5 per cent of people taking their driving test in Carlisle pass.

Conversely in Alnwick, Northumberland, 77.4 per cent of people taking their driving test pass - the best success rate in England.

Apart from Alnwick, all the top places for passing are in Scotland, with 91.2 per cent of people taking the test in the west coastal town of Inveraray passing.

In order, the top 10 hardest places to pass a driving test are:

1 Rochdale, Greater Manchester, pass rate of 31.3 per cent

2 Carlisle, pass rate of 31.5 per cent

3 Erith, south east London, pass rate of 31.6 per cent

4 South Yardley, Birmingham, pass rate of 32.3 per cent

5 Speke, Liverpool, pass rate of 33.5 per cent

6 Leeds, pass rate of 33.9 per cent

7 Wanstead, east London, pass rate of 33.9 per cent

8 Kingstanding, Birmingham, pass rate of 35.1 per cent

9 Bury, Greater Manchester, pass rate of 35.4 per cent

10 Sutton Coldfield, Birmingham, pass rate of 35.4 per cent

The figures, taken from the DVSA's most recent pass rate statistics, were analysed by online tyre firm Just Tyres.
