A SPONSORED swim in aid of MacMillan Cancer Support will see people try to swim one million metres this month.

Wigton Baths Trusts set up the fundraiser to raise money in aid of the charity.

Alan Pitcher, honorary president for Wigton Baths Trust, said: “It’s an idea of a Spanish friend to show support for Helen Smithson who is the daughter of Colin Smithson, one of the founders of Wigton Baths Trust.

“Without him supporting me I wouldn’t have set the trust up.

“Helen is currently undergoing chemotherapy treatment and is being looked after by MacMillan.

“The idea is to swim one million metres and raise money doing it.”

Jose Ramos Garcia Cortes who is a friend of both Alan’s and Colin’s is also aiming to swim one million metres in Spain.

The team at Wigton swimming baths are encouraging people to take part to show Helen that she has support all while raising money for Macmillan Cancer support.

“All proceeds will go towards Macmillan Cancer Support and our targets along with our friends out in Spain is to swim one million metres,” continued Mr Pitcher.

Taking place all this month a separate lane will be provided for anyone who wishes to take part.

Anyone who would like to take part can swim anything from two lengths - 40 metres - to 88 lengths - 1,600 metres.
