Widespread flooding across Cumbria has prompted a warning from a county mountain rescue organisation of the risk posed by fast flowing water.

Lake District Search and Mountain Rescue Association has urged all those in Cumbria to be mindful of the risks posed by floodwater, in light of the recent flooding caused by Storms Ciara and Dennis - with more flooding potentially on the way.

The association has warned that just 12 inches - or 30cm - of fast moving water “can carry away a small car.”

Six inches - or 15cm - of fast moving water can “knock over and carry away an adult”, while 18-24 inches can carry away most large cars, vans and trucks.

A spokesman for the association said: “That short stretch of flooded road in front of you can hide many traps - collapsed drains and culverts, debris.

“If you cannot see what’s beneath the water take great care or better still turn back.”
