A man in his 60s who smashed the window of a Carlisle church has repaid the cost of the damage, after being cautioned by the police.

After being caught on CCTV breaking the window of a Wigton Road church hall, the man was arrested by Cumbria Police.

Admitting the offence, he was given a conditional caution which included paying back the amount of damage caused to the church.

Cumbria Police Sergeant Georgina Bell said: “During their investigation, officers recognised a pattern to this series of damage.

"Perseverance by the officers resulted in the man being detained prior to a further episode occurring.

"Following arrest he admitted responsibility and has since reimbursed the church to pay for the damages.

"The determination of those involved in this case is a good example of our commitment in bringing offenders to justice and providing a positive outcome for victims of crime.”
