Hundreds of schoolchildren joined together to celebrate Chinese New Year.

An event – said to be West Cumbria’s largest Chinese New Year festival celebrations – was held at St Bees School.

It included Chinese cooking demonstrations, a chopstick challenge, calligraphy and paper-cutting workshops.

Residents of the village were also invited to the event.

A school spokesman said: “The festivities mark the fusion and ‘West meets East’ ethos of St Bees School.”

The school is managed by Chinese educational experts, Full Circle Education Group, and was an extension to its usual Mandarin classes which they have several times a week.

The day of activities held on Friday also included traditional Chinese printing, cultural presentations, Chinese games and indoor fireworks.
