Snow is falling on the M6 and motorists are asked to take care.

Drivers are using two lanes on the main route through Cumbria between junction 41 and 42.

Hazardous driving conditions have been reported on Kirkstone Pass between Townhead Brow and Road End.

The is also hazardous driving conditions as a result of the snow on A6 round Shap Summit.

Hartside Pass between the Slaggyford turn off and the Gamblesby turn off is also reported as hazardous.

A weather warning for ice has been lifted by the Met Office for Cumbria.

The yellow warning - the lowest level of all warnings - finished 10am this morning.

It covered all northern England, Scotland and Northern Ireland.

Forecasters warned of some injuries from slips and falls on icy surfaces, and said that some icy patches will appear on untreated roads, pavements and cycle paths.

Some roads and railways may also be affected with longer journey times by road, bus and train services.

A spokesman for the Met Office said: "Showers of rain, hail and sleet are likely this morning, leading to a risk of ice on some surfaces as temperatures fall below freezing.

"Some snow is also possible, but mostly restricted to high ground above 200 metres where a few centimetres may settle."
