A CONSTRUCTION worker has appeared in court charged with wounding with intent, failing to stop and driving dangerously.

Speaking only to confirm his name, date of birth, address and nationality, Daniel James English, 30, appeared at Carlisle’s magistrates’ court yesterday.

He faced three charges relating to an incident on Monday on Ullswater Road, which is just off Wigton Road.

Appearing from behind a screen, he did not enter a plea.

Emergency services were called to the street shortly after 2.30pm.

A pedestrian who was injured in the incident, a 46-year-old man from Carlisle, remains in a critical but stable condition at the Royal Victoria Infirmary in Newcastle.

The Great North Air Ambulance was called and landed on a grass section beside Borrowdale Road.

A spokesman for Cumbria police said officers were contacted by the North West Ambulance Service at about 2.45pm.

Defending English was John Smith.

Leading the prosecution was Amy Labram.

English, of Stonegarth in the Morton area of the city, faced one charge of wounding Darren Read with intent to cause him grievous bodily harm; one charge of failing to stop after a road accident; and one of driving a vehicle dangerously.

Presiding magistrate Mark Travers remanded English in custody ahead of his next court appearance.

English will appear before Carlisle Crown Court on February 21 at 10am.

Claire Porter, 32, of Greta Avenue, Carlisle, has been charged with assisting an offender.

She is scheduled to appear at Carlisle’s magistrates’ court on February 4.
