TRAIN services were at a standstill on the west coast mainline after a lorry became wedged under a bridge in Carlisle.
The lorry blocked Crown Street, off Botchergate, for several hours
Services with Avanti West Coast, TransPennine Express and Northern were been delayed while Network Rail could inspect the bridge.
The road was closed until just after 2pm.
Bystanders were shocked to see what had happened saying it wasn't the first time it had happened.
Cumbria County Council asked people to stay away from the area while work was on going.
A spokesman from Network Rail said: “When the lorry was removed we assessed the bridge for damage, safety is out number one priority."
