Flood alerts for the Wigton, Brampton and Longtown areas have been lifted, but a flood alert for Carlisle is still in place.

After reviewing river levels this morning, the Environment Agency has lifted last night's flood alerts for the Rivers Esk, Irthing, Wampool and Ellen, lifting the threat of flooding for Longtown, Brampton and Wigton.

However a flood alert for the lower River Eden is still in place, leaving Carlisle still at risk from potential flooding should river levels rise higher.

An Environment Agency spokesman said: "River levels remain high at the Linstock river gauge.

"Areas affected will be low lying land and roads in the Crosby-on-Eden, Linstock, Carlisle and Rockcliffe areas.

"High river levels are possible on the River Eden, River Caldew, River Petteril, Durranhill Beck, Brunstock Beck, Gosling Sike, Little Caldew, Parham Beck, Rockcliffe Beck and their tributaries.

"The heavy rain has now cleared the area and only scattered showers are expected today.

"We are closely monitoring the situation.

"Please avoid using low lying footpaths near local watercourses."

The Environement Agency will review the alert later today, or if the situation changes.
