JANUARY is a perfect month to dust down those trainers and get active again.

Here in Cumbria there are a number of great places to help you to get fit in 2020.

Earlier this week, we asked readers of the News & Star to recommend their favourite gyms in the north and west of the county on our Facebook and Twitter pages. Thanks to everyone who got involved and provided their feedback.

In no particular order, here are the number of places as recommended by you, our readers.

1: ICAN HEALTH & FITNESS, CARLISLE

The female-only gym, on Lorne Street, Denton Holme, once again received lots of responses from readers.

Suzan Hunter said: “A not-for-profit gym changing attitudes from ‘I Can’t’ to ‘I Can’ – friendly professional service for all abilities.”

Mag Keith posted: “A gym for all ages, shapes and sizes. Friendly, encouraging and supportive staff and coaches.

“I couldn’t – but now I can.”

Diane Wilson added: “The staff are very friendly. They make keeping fit fun and every week is different.

“Ladies of all ages and fitness levels are welcomed with open arms. It’s not just a gym, they are like a big family. I love it.”

2: ETL GYMS, ACROSS CUMBRIA

Lynn Irving said: “ETL the best gym in Cumbria.

“The staff are friendly and the training is so varied you never get bored.

“Lots of humour and no one is left out. Great bunch of people.”

3: LIFESTYLE FITNESS, CARLISLE

The Currock Road gym is open 24 hours, apart from Christmas Day, and has a range of fitness equipment.

Sandie Drever said: “Great staff. Their personal trainer has helped me so much with my chronic illness, and provided me with invaluable information to make it a lifestyle choice, adapt things for a good/bad day for me.”

4: XTREME FITNESS, WORKINGTON

Victoria Beck said: “Xtreme Fitness – they’ve helped transform so many people’s lives.

“Xtreme go above and beyond and welcome everyone with open arms and support everyone to help them achieve their goals. Not just a gym, it’s a family.”

5: MODROCA, CARLISLE

The gym, based on Rosemary Lane in Carlisle city centre, was suggested by many.

Vicki Bainbridge said: “Modroca – it’s fun, friendly and effective.

“A quick 30-minute blast and you see and feel the difference in just a few sessions.

“Always friendly and welcoming. I wouldn’t go anywhere else.”

6: FITNESS STUDIO, BRAMPTON

Based on Townfoot Industrial Estate in Brampton, the gym was recommended by several readers.

Elizabeth Summerfield said: “The Fitness Studio in Brampton. Lyndsey Ferguson is amazing.

“She never judges, just gives you the enthusiasm to get fit and you’re never made to feel bad about yourself only given the help to start loving yourself.

“I highly recommend the nutritional talks.”

7: DISTRICT FITNESS, PENRITH

Analeize Lawson said: “Amazing new facilities, supportive, knowledgeable coaches and a fun, friendly community of members of all ages and abilities. It really is a game changer.”
