Children as young as two are learning about mental health and wellbeing.

Grasslot Infant School in Maryport is taking care of everyone from the youngest child to members of staff.

Staff have completed Healthy Family accreditation and the school has appointed Megan Howard as a Physical Activity and Nutrition Coordinator (PANCo).

Learning assistant Angela Holliday is doing Emotional Literacy Support Assistant training while teaching assistants have completed their Youth Mental Health First Aid qualifications.

The school is also actively involving parents in bespoke sessions to up-skill them and develop this focus on mental wellbeing further through Family Learning sessions.

Children used their Christmas concert to raise £250 for West Cumbria Samaritans. They have also raised £50 for Youth Minds.

Headteacher Karen Loudon said : “The school aspires to provide the children with the best possible start through a joined-up approach to impact on their achievement.

“This concentrates on healthy nutrition, physical activity and emotional health and wellbeing”.

She said: “Adolescent mental health has been seen to be a real issue in this area.

“We are hoping that by promoting mental health and wellbeing now, we are giving these little children coping strategies that they will be able to build on and and use to help them cope in the future.”
