Demolition of a town centre building, deemed unsafe has begun – ready to make way for a 54-space car park.

The building, on Workington's New Oxford Street, formerly housed the county council's adult social care and children's services departments.

But it was deemed unsafe following high winds last month when reports of damage to the roof emerged, causing a temporary closure of Oxford Street.

Now, the new owner of the site, is demolishing the existing buildings, ready for it to be turned into a car park.

There are temporary traffic lights in place while the work is undertaken.

The new car park, which received planning permission from Allerdale council last year, will have 54 spaces, three of which will be disabled bays.

There will also be 15 extra spaces for bicycles.
