A Carlisle man, said to be driven by jealousy, subjected his former partner to a terrifying ordeal which ended when he pursued her car and then drove directly at it and collided with it

The incident, just north of the Border near Canonbie, could have resulted in fatal consequences, said Sheriff Brian Mohan at Dumfries.

And he told 22-year-old Andrew Green that he had shown behaviour which was out of control.

Green, of Sheffield Street, Carlisle, admitted three charges involving threatening behaviour and assaulting his former 19-year-old partner and driving dangerously and directly at her car.

The court was told that the year long relationship had ended in November last year but just weeks later in January he had turned up at her home in Langholm.

He had behaved in a threatening or abusive manner, repeatedly shouting and swearing at her, referring to her in derogatory terms, emptying the contents of her handbag into a hot tub, repeatedly making threats of violence during which he smashed her mobile phone, threw items of glassware and crockery and damaged cosmetics.

Following that Green had entered her home and gone into her bedroom uninvited while she was sleeping, repeatedly poured water over her, pinned her to the bed, seized her by the n3eck and compressed it, head butted her, hed a piece of broken glass against her face, seized her by the hair, dragged her and repeatedly told her she deserved to die.

The final incident came in March on the B6537 road between Canonbie and Rowanburn resulting in her car having to be written off.

It was stated that Green pursued her vehicle, overtook when it wasn’t safe to do so and drove directly at it causing her to take evasive action and crashed into it.

Solicitor Carolyn Priestley stressed that the course of conduct was over a relatively short period following what seemed to have been an “unhealthy and unhappy” relationship.

She added: “He has difficulties in dealing with emotional matters and recognises this was an inappropriate way to behave and now want to put it behind him and has the support of his family in trying to deal with these issues.”

Sheriff Mohan made Green the subject of a community payback order with conditions he be under supervision for two years and undertake a special behavioural programme.

He also ordered him to pay compensation of £2,000 and imposed a non-harassment order for two years and banned him from entering Langholm for eight months.
