McDonald’s, Greggs, KFC and Subway have all launched new vegan options for Veganuary. Our readers had their say on the News & Star website and Facebook page.
Hopefully one day they will launch food for people with intolerances.

Being vegan is a choice. Being coeliac (gluten intolerant) is not. But they do nothing for us. Glad some places do. Well done Stony Holme, great gluten free menu.
Denise Wood
Without being tinfoil hat, what kind of processed stuff is in the substitutes?
I like pulled jackfruit, seitan burgers, black bean chilli and buffalo cauli as non-meat food but I’ve always wondered (apart from tofu) what’s in the substitutes?
The beyond meat burgers are great in my opinion, but don’t know what’s in them.
Jamie Tickner
Hope it’s all cooked in a different area or you’re getting the grease off my lovely cooked meaty burger.
John Hall
But they still can’t do anything for people with intolerances.

Funny how grandparents, and family before all managed without gluten free and ate meat, all fat dairy, dripping etc. Now it’s....all bad for you, get rid and eat less meat and fat. My mother still fit as a fiddle and dancing living off that diet with no health issues at all. I think this generation has gone too much the other way.
Kelly Little
Daughter’s friends had the vegan steak bake and KFC, both amazing apparently.
Victoria Claire Irving
Dairy free would be good... my kids have to eat vegan at these places because all bread or pastry etc contains milk.
Pamela Robertson
Looking forward to meatvember later in the year.
Carl McDermott
People need to stop having a go at each other for their own choices. Each to their own. Shouting, bullying and slander isn’t going to change anyone’s choice. Educate is the better option without criticism.
Clare Derek Gill
Imagine the outcry if there was a month dedicated to meat eaters.
Ross Broad
There would be no outcry whatsoever. Next.
Charlie Davidson
The idea is to be healthy, eating meat isn’t unhealthy nor does it impact on the environment as much as rice harvests do.
Helen Deal
It’s about time Greggs put more effort into gluten free products for those with an actual medical condition.
Emma Hogarth
I’m a meat eater, but if they named it ‘mushroom bake’, or ‘quorn bake’, or ‘protein and gravy bake’, so I know what’s in it, I’d be more tempted to try it, rather than ‘something which looks like but isn’t steak bake’. Same applies to any of the vegan replacements.
Abi Austin
It’s a big fad! Just like vegetarians wearing leather shoes and handbags, some even eat bacon.
Why such a big fuss - companies are just cashing in on it! I could live without meat.
Everyone has a choice - live and let live.
Angelique Sansome
If being a vegan is that good then why do they have to eat food disguised as a meat dish? Riddle me that!
Chris Forbes
Because they like the taste but don’t want to kill animals? I’m not vegan but it isn’t rocket science.
Jess Thompson-Gray
If eating animals is that good then why do you have to chop them into tiny bits, cook them, and hide them in pastry. Carnivores don’t have a patent on pies.
Soleil Thompson
Can’t wait! KFC’s vegan burger is lovely!
June Terry
As someone who is lactose intolerant with severe IBS, I rarely eat meat so I’m not ill. Can’t wait to try this. It’s time there were more dairy free products out there for people like myself and people who have sever dairy allergies.
Why do so many people have to get so bothered about the things people choose to eat and not to eat?
Lucy Aiston
I like how everyone is acting like all their meat products are being taken from the menu and being replaced by these.
Terry Short
Why do people get so easily triggered by vegan products? Have you ever tried the vegan sausage roll from Greggs? It’s quite nice. But here’s the thing...no one is going to force you to eat one.
