Northern has blamed its Christmas Eve train cancellations on “unprecedented” levels of staff sickness and holiday entitlements.

The train operator said it was ran a reduced service on December 24 from stations across the north west, including the Carlisle via Whitehaven to Barrow line.

The company apologised to passengers in a statement for the disruption.

“Alongside the annual leave entitlements at this time of the year, we had unprecedented levels of sickness,” a Northern spokesman said.
