LIFESAVER Jordan Lane from west Cumbria has been hailed as a "true hero" after helping a woman who was run over by a car.

In a horror accident at Bridges Retail Park in Whitehaven on November 22, an elderly woman fell behind a car into the road.

Jordan said: "It all happened that fast, I just saw her fall over and the next thing I knew before I had chance to jump out of my van a car had started to reverse..."

Without realising that the elderly woman had fallen behind the car, the driver reversed. The 91 year-old woman was seriously injured.

Jordan of Egremont was nearby working his day job as a driver for PHS. He also volunteers for Whitehaven Coastguard Rescue Team and therefore had the first aid training to help the woman.

He said: "It was a scary situation."

However, he added: "It's something that we have trained for."

HM Coastguard Head of Coastguard Operations Pete Mizen said: "Jordan's training kicked in and his quick thinking helped to save a life.

He said: "His speedy and instinctive actions that day proved that coastguards are never off duty and are always there to help members of the public when they need it most."

Colleague Karen Cordin said: "He took his coat off and put it over her because there was a lot of tissue damage."

Jordan stemmed the bleeding until an ambulance arrived.

Karen nominated Jordan for the PHS Star Award. She said: "We have a PHS Star Award if anyone goes above and beyond."

The Cumberland Infirmary in Carlisle has since contacted Jordan: "She wants to meet me" he said.

The woman who was injured in the incident would like to meet Jordan to thank him personally for saving her life.
