A mother and daughter who rescue and rehome huskies have penned a book to help dog owners train their pets.

Sonia Gager-Tomkinson, 61, and her daughter Lexie, 23, are the owners of Horse and Husky, a non-profit making business, based near Bootle.

The duo, along with Rob Mason, run the business which currently has 20 husky dogs and offers experiences to the public with their trained dogs.

And they are set to use their knowledge to help others, after writing a book, entitled Deviant Dog to Dream Dog, which focuses on the struggles and solutions to doggie problems.

Sonia explained the motivation behind the book: “Although huskies can make wonderful pets, they can often prove difficult to fit into a busy human world as they are known to be a challenging breed and not the easiest to train.”

The book has been written as a training aid to be applied to any dog, not just huskies and hopefully will give people the skills to help train a challenging dog and help avoid adding to the statistics of rescue dogs.

Lexi, who has designed and published a book for the first time, said they had translated her mum’s tried and tested methods of training.

“We have broken the book down into four chapters of principles and strategies and used illustrations and diagrams to help explain things in a simple fun way,” she said.

“We are so pleased with how the book looks and can’t wait to share it with anyone who would like some help and guidance with their pet.

“Although we mainly have rescue huskies the book is suitable for any dog no matter the breed, age, or even its previous experiences. People can work towards, and achieve, their goals with their pets.”

The Horse and Husky centre host activities including ‘Dry Dog Sledding’, ‘husky hikes’ and ‘meet the pack’ alongside the rescue, training and rehoming of huskies. They welcome anyone thinking of getting a husky to go and learn about the dogs before purchasing one.

The book ‘Deviant Dog to Dream Dog’ is available to buy under the duo’s pen names Lexie Liebhart & Sonia Liebhart from online store Lulu.com priced £9.99.

Dedicated to the rescue and rehoming of husky dogs the owners of ‘Horse and Husky’ based in Cumbria have put pen to paper and co-written a self-published book to help dogs and their owners.

‘Horse and Husky’ is a non-profit making business that has been established for over eight years by founders Sonia Gager-Tomkinson, 61, and her daughter Lexie, 23. The mother and daughter team plus staff member Rob Mason run the centre which is situated near to the coast in Bootle, West Cumbria.

They welcome anyone thinking of getting a husky to come and learn about the dogs before purchasing one.

Sonia explains their motivation behind writing the book it is due to the fact they are overwhelmed with people getting in touch asking them to help rehome Huskies from all over the country. “Although Huskies can make wonderful pets, they often can prove difficult to fit into a busy human world as Huskies are known to be a challenging breed and not the easiest to train,” she said

The book has been written as a training aid that can be applied to any dog, not just Huskies and hopefully will give people the skills to help train a challenging dog and thus helping to avoiding adding to the statistics of rescue dogs.

They want to help provide dog owners with the knowledge, motivation and mindset to train or transform their dog to be calm, happy and a better family pet.

The book titled ‘Deviant Dog to Dream Dog’ focuses on the struggles people may be having with their dog and finding a solution.

Sonia and Lexi hope by applying the methods in their book people will be able to get the best out of their relationship with their dog.

Lexi, who has designed and published a book for the first time, said: “By translating into print mums tried and tested methods and ideas to training dogs. We have broken the book down into four chapters of principles and strategies and used illustrations and diagrams to help explain things in a simple fun way.”

Lexi is currently studying full time in Management and Leadership at University of Cumbria and says it’s been a challenge at times to get the book published alongside studying. But it’s all been worth it “We are so pleased how the book looks and can’t wait to share it with anyone who would like some help and guidance with their pet.”
