On election day, it seems that the country didn’t trust the Labour leader, but was happy to be taken in by the Conservative leader.

When he promoted Brexit at the time of the referendum he did not bother to explain what was involved in extricating the UK from the EU, the length of time it would take, or the danger to which the UK would then be exposed when striking trade deals with the likes of the US.

Those voting to leave were presumably thinking it would be a case of signing a single document - then job done!

So now we have the arrogance of local Conservative MPs saying “I don’t see a future for Labour”, and what a bright outlook the area has under the Tories. This is after nine years of government cut-backs, austerity and neglect while the rich in the south-east of the country get ever richer. And they want us to believe that that will change?

In the News & Star coverage of December 14, the consensus seems to be expand the ridiculously expensive, dirty and uncontrolled nuclear industry, go for unlimited economic growth, and encourage people from the other side of the world to visit the Lakes.

No mention about addressing a little thing called the climate crisis, or social justice, or plastic pollution.

The outlook for the next five years does not look promising.
