A CARLISLE mum who was brutally attacked by her partner has penned a moving account of the profound impact of his violence.

David Parkin, 41, repeatedly stabbed the woman with nail scissors as he pinned her to a bed - and strangled her to the point where she lost consciousness.

His violence ceased only after she blacked out, covered in blood.

At Carlisle Crown Court this week, a judge was told how the September 18 attack - in a bedroom at the woman's Harraby home - was triggered by Parkin's paranoid and jealous suspicion that the woman was interested in somebody else, which she vehemently denied.

He admitted an assault causing actual bodily harm.

In a heart-rending statement, the woman told how the scars she now has are a constant reminder of his violence.

"Every time she looks in the mirror, she notices the scars and that makes her upset again," said prosecutor Gerard Rogerson.

She was so traumatised she had to move out of her home, into another property.

The woman suffered pain and muscular damage, leading to deafness in her left ear, which could last for up to two months.

Her injuries also led to her suffering headaches, tiredness, and a lack of concentration - the result of the concussion she sustained in the attack, said Mr Rogerson.

"She continues to suffer headaches," said the lawyer.

Mr Rogerson spoke also of the impact on the woman's mental health.

He said: "She feels scared and very anxious, and was unable to leave her address initially; her sister or mother had to go with her every time she wanted to go out from the house.

"She was unable to sleep for two weeks because of the anxiety and panic attacks.

"She was unable to sleep in a bed for the first two weeks because of the anxiety and panic attacks,.

"She had to sleep in a reclining chair."

Mr Rogerson said the woman broke down if she was left alone in her house; and she still suffered panic attacks and flashbacks.

She told police: "I just didn't think that someone who is meant to love you .. would do that; and would go to that length to hurt you."

The bed in which she was stabbed was so blood-soaked it had to be thrown out.

The woman revealed that her child - who gave her first aid after the assault, using towels to staunch the blood flow  - completely broke down when she first had to return to the house.

Neither she nor her mother felt able to return to the property, which had been their home for more than a decade.

The woman said Parkin destroyed the life she had.

Parkin, who after carrying out the attack told the woman he loved her, was jailed for 18 months.

The judge also banned him from contacting his former partner for five years.

His defence barrister said the £42,000 a year Pirelli worker, of School Road, Harraby, had no history of violence and he had shown remorse.

It was he who had called an ambulance after the attack, she said.

The lawyer added that in 2017 Parkin had suffered a breakdown and had seen his doctor about possibly suffering from post-traumatic stress.

He had also worked with youngsters to help steer them away from drugs and alcohol - something he had renounced a decade ago.
