HEAVY rain and severe winds are causing disruption across the county.

The Met Office have issued two weather warnings for Cumbria - one for up to 100mm of rain and another forecasting 70mph winds.

The warning for strong winds is in place until 5pm, while the alert for rain remains until 8pm this evening (Tuesday).

Meanwhile, the Environment Agency have eight flood alerts and one flood warning in place in Cumbria.

The flood alerts, which state that flooding is possible, affect the following locations:

  • Rivers Caldew and Petteril
  • Lower River Eden
  • Rivers Brathay, Rothay and Winster
  • Rivers Cocker, Marron and Derwent
  • Rivers Duddon, Crake and Mill Beck
  • Rivers Ehen, Calder, Irt and Esk
  • Rivers Greta, St Johns Beck and Bassenthwaite Lake
  • Rivers Kent and Bela
  • Rivers Lowther and Eamont
  • Upper River Derwent, Stonethwaite Beck and Derwentwater

Elsewhere, the weather conditions have left more than 600 homes without power across north Cumbria.

Electricity North West have said that supplies should be restored by about 7.30pm.

On the roads, drivers are being urged to take care, and avoid travel unless necessary.

As of 5pm, the situation on the roads stands as:

  • A66 between Penrith to Bowes: The road is closed in both directions to high sided vehicles due to strong winds between M6 J40 (Penrith, Cumbria) and A67 (Bowes, Durham).
  • A66 at Keswick: One lane is blocked due to flooding on A66 Westbound from A591 Penrith Road to A591 (Crossthwaite Roundabout).
  • A591 at Rydal: Traffic is very slow due to flooding on A591 both ways near Rydal Hall, Ambleside.
  • A591 at Troutbeck Bridge: Traffic is queueing due to flooding on A591 both ways at Calgarth Cottages.
  • A591 at Windermere: Traffic is queueing due to flooding on A591 near Windermere train station.
  • Windermere Ferry: The vehicle ferry is not in operation due to poor weather conditions on Windermere Ferry between Bowness and Far Sawrey.
  • M6: Traffic is very slow due to strong winds on M6 from J38 A685 (Tebay) to J39 B6261 (Shap). The matrix sign set to 50 mph.
  • A594 at Cockermouth: Reports of flooding on the A594 at Cockermouth.
  • B5299 Mealsgate to Boltongate: The road is blocked due to flooding. A vehicle has become stuck in a flood.
