A "significant" bedroom fire in a Carlisle flat prompted a rescue effort from passers-by through an open window.

Firefighters from Carlisle east and west fire stations were called to Cant Crescent in Upperby, at about 10.15pm.

A spokesman for Carlisle east fire station said: "On arrival, crews were faced with a significant bedroom fire in a downstairs flat.

"Thankfully some passers by had heard the smoke alarms sounding, and had rescued the occupant of the property through an open window before our arrival.

"Crews then administered oxygen therapy to the casualty until the arrival of an ambulance."
