THE utility company in charge of the Warwick Road roadworks has said that the current section of works could be completed as early as next week.

United Utilities has confirmed the roadworks on the eastern side of the carriageway are nearing completion, adding that tests will be carried out next week to ensure the works meet their standards.

Once complete, the firm is then hoping to remove the temporary traffic lights by the end of next week.

Work will start on the opposite side of the road in the new year.

A spokeswoman for United Utilities said: “Engineers are nearing completion of the lining work on the section of water pipe running under one side of Warwick Road.

“Tests will be carried out over the next few days and into next week to ensure it meets company strict standards.

“Once complete, the plan is to remove the temporary traffic management by the end of next week.”

She continued: “Further work is required to refurbish another large water main which runs under the opposite side of Warwick Road.

“This is likely to start early next year, but more information on the exact start date will be made available after consultation with Cumbria’s highways officials.”

Drivers have faced months of disruption on the road, as long tailbacks delay drivers in both directions.

Work was suspended at the end of last month, after Cumbria County Council closed one lane after fears for Botcherby Bridge.

Many residents have spoken about their frustration with the delays in completing the work and the associated congestion.
