THREE thugs tried to steal a woman's mobility scooter - and then verbally abused their victim.
The disturbing encounter happened in High Street, Maryport, at 11pm on Tuesday, said a Cumbria Police spokesman.
Officers are now trying to trace the trio responsible.
In a statement, police said: "It is reported that three man attempted to steal a mobility scooter attached to a lamp post on High Street, Maryport.
"When challenged by the owner the men verbally abused and followed them to Pearl Garden on Wood Street, Maryport.
"The men continued to be abusive to her and grabbed hold of her attempting to forcefully remove her from the takeaway.
"The men also made offensive gestures to the victim."
The confrontation is being investigated as an assault and an attempted theft.
Police have appealed for witnesses.
