A YOUNG man who was stopped by police as he rode his motorbike too fast along a Carlisle street was under the influence of cannabis.

A police officer intervened after seeing 23-year-old Danny Green riding faster than the 30mph speed limit in Nelson Street, Denton Holme, Carlisle, on May 28.

As he spoke to Green, the officer immediately noticed the defendant smelled strongly of cannabis, the city’s magistrates’ court heard.

Green, of Peel Street, Carlisle, admitted riding his motorbike while over the prescribed limit for the cannabis derivative THC. A test showed he had more than three times the permitted limit of the drug in his system.

Chris Toms, for Green, said the defendant had been open and frank about what happened.

“He hopes to put this behind him,” said the lawyer.“He has given up on the recreational use of drugs as a result of this; and he’s given up on motorcycles for the foreseeable future.

“He is not working at the moment and is dependent on his parents income.

“This will blight his potential career prospects.”

Mr Toms added that the defendant was a personable and pleasant young man.Magistrates issued a one year driving ban, £80 fine, £30 victim surcharge and £85 costs.
