A Gogglebox-inspired opera-musical comedy focussing on the extraordinary life of Kim Kardashian comes to Cumbria this weekend.

Switching between the original Mozart tunes of The Marriage of Figaro and pop, hip hop and indie music by Carlisle-born composer Stephen Hyde, The Marriage of Kim K mixes electronic pop, classical opera, and contemporary musical theatre.

Stephen and his co-composer Leo Mercer launched the show in 2017 and after playing the Edinburgh Fringe and touring the UK, it makes its first appearance in Cumbria at Keswick’s Theatre by the Lake.

He says he’s bringing a completely different show to the original: “What we have at the moment is the product of a lot of rewrites and feedback.

“Vast swathes of music and lyrics have changed and plot lines have been developed.

“It was originally based on the Mozart opera and a lot of the melodies were were Mozart, but there is only one now .

“There are more original tunes , with hip hop, pop and even indie singer-songwriter stuff.”

The basic storyline remains the same: Three pairs of lives unfold on stage – reality star Kim Kardashian and her 72-day husband Kris Humphries, Mozart’s tempestuous Count and Countess Almaviva of revolutionary France, and a young couple fighting over which of these to watch on TV.

Stephen studied at Manchester’s Chethams School of Music (where he was awarded the composition prize), won a choral scholarship to the University of Oxford, and was shortlisted for the 2018 Cameron Macintosh composer residency.

He now lives in London and says: “It is great that we have got to Cumbria at last. Keswick is our last stop on this tour. My parents still live at Ellonby, near Penrith, so I’ll be staying a couple of days with them.”
