A Workington vicar is hoping to reach out to anyone with suicidal thoughts.

Rev Steve Axtell is holding a workshop to help people with mental health problems, which has become an issue close to his heart.

St Mary’s CofE Church at Westfield mourned the loss of popular lay-minister Gareth Douglas-Brown, who took his own life earlier this year.

And now Rev Axtell is determined to help others in the same situation, after becoming aware of the high suicide rate in West Cumbria.

“The more people know how to spot the signs and help, the better the chances of lowering this terrible figure,” said Rev Axtell.

“It is possible that the right word at the right time can save a life.”

Rev Axtell has decided to host a workshop on supporting people with mental health issues at the church which will take place on Saturday.

The talk will be lead by Carlisle and Eden MIND and is designed to advise people on how to help their friends and neighbours who may be suffering from suicidal thoughts.

People interested in the workshop should call 07760 826407.
