A newly minted artwork has found a permanent home in Cockermouth and is to be unveiled tomorrow.

A specially designed quilt celebrating the town was created by the U3A’s Patchwork and Quilting Group for the Great Northern Quilt Show in Harrogate, North Yorkshire, last August, and has been donated to Kirkgate Arts.

The work will be officially unveiled by the mayor of Cockermouth, Julie Laidlow, at 11.30am tomorrow, as part of the open weekend at the Kirkgate Centre.

Kirkgate Arts also wants to develop new ideas for activities in West Cumbria over the next five years so this weekend is a chance for the public to have a say.

On Saturday, there will be ‘behind the scenes’ tours and community groups that use the Kirkgate will have stalls, and local musicians and the Kirkgate Youth Theatre will perform.

Kirkgate Arts Heritage Group will have a small exhibition and there will be a pop-up second hand clothing shop.

On Sunday, Christmas craft activities for children will run from 10am to 2pm and from 3-4pm there is a demonstration of sword fighting by the North Lakes Historical Fencing Group.

Short films featuring Cockermouth and Cumbria will be screened. Entry is free.
