I would just like to comment on the appalling incident at Dixon's Chimney.
I was there on the day as I have a flat in Shaddon Mill. I was absolutely appalled at the behaviour of the watching public.
They seemed to thrive on the conversation between themselves and seemed to leer at the scene. One man had a long lense camera taking pictures and another woman stood at her gate of her terraced house with a cup of tea, talking to passers by and enjoying the attention.
I cannot fathom how people get a thrill out of watching someone else’s problems, it’s like people are attracted to road accidents or domestic incidents.
I spent no more than five minutes there as I could not gain entrance to my flat and returned after the rescue had taken place. I simply could not watch someone else’s pain and suffering, and the effect on his family and friends.
I believe the modern world is fast becoming less friendly and morbid.
