TRIBUTES have been paid to a former Carlisle mayor and Yewdale city councillor.

Elise Coleman, who died recently, served the city in her mayoral role between 1991 and 1992 and will be remembered for the hard work she did campaigning to provide a new community centre in her ward, councillors have been told.

At a city council meeting on Tuesday night, Councillor Colin Glover paid tribute to her, saying: “She was hugely proud of the city of Carlisle and regularly attended civic events, supporting many mayors, until very recently when failing health meant she could no longer do so.

“I want to place on record the thanks of the council and the city to Elsie, as a hard working councillor, campaigner and servant of the city of Carlisle.”

The flag at the Civic Centre is flying at half mast in tribute.
