PART of the A66 was closed for several hours after a late-night crash - one woman is still in hospital.

Emergency services were called to the scene at about 1am on Sunday after a serious road traffic collision on the A66 Keswick bypass near the Penrith Road.

A diversion route was in place for drivers until the road reopened at about 8am.

The collision is said to have involved a blue Citroen C1 and a Scania articulated heavy goods vehicle.

A spokesman for Cumbria police said: "The driver of the Citroen C1, a 48-year-old woman from the Keswick area, was taken to Cumberland Infirmary Carlisle with injuries not believed to be life-threatening. She remains in hospital. The driver of the Scania was uninjured."

Police are appealing for any witnesses who were in the area around 1am or who may have seen either the Citroen C1 of Scania prior to the collision to contact PC2443 MacLeod of the Mobile Support Group on 101.
