A dedicated woman who spent 25 years caring for children at a Whitehaven primary school has retired.

Hilary Batty, early birds and after school club leader at St James’ C of E Infant & Nursery School, bid farewell to pupils and staff after two and a half decades of service.

She has occupied many roles within the school during this time, including midday supervisor, teaching assistant and providing one-to-one support.

In her current role Mrs Batty has overseen the running of the successful breakfast and after school clubs, which offer a range of activities for pupils.

A special assembly was held to celebrate Mrs Batty’s commitment to the school, where children shared their memories of her and sang songs before presenting her with gifts and cards.

Headteacher Michael Craig said: “Hilary was a very important member of our school staff. She was often the first person to greet some of our children into school and the last one to say goodbye for so many.

“This is vitally important to ensure that children are coming into and leaving school happily.

“She is going to be a great miss for our school - for the staff and children.

“She has served our school and children brilliantly for 25 years and I want to thank her for all of her hard work. We all hope she enjoys her well earned retirement.”

Speaking at the assembly, Mrs Batty said: “There are not many jobs where you get hugs and are surrounded by little smiling faces every day and having lovely pictures drawn for you.

“I am so lucky to have this for the last 25 years so thank you St James’ Infant and Nursery School for that.”

Mr Craig added: “When children spoke of their memories in the assembly, they said things like, ‘I liked all the yummy food you made.’ ‘I liked all the fun activities we got to do like art and crafts.’ ‘Mrs Batty was always kind to me and would give me a hug if I was feeling sad.’ ‘I loved playing with her toys in breakfast club.’”

Mrs Batty is now looking forward to visiting family, spending more time with her grandchildren and going touring in her motor home.
