Pupils from a troubled Carlisle secondary school where new rules triggered a rowdy protest have defended their headteacher’s bid to introduce stricter discipline. Our readers had their say on the News & Star website and Facebook page.
Well done pupils, proud of you.
Joan Trickett
Well written letters, pupils the school should be proud of.
Deb Uttley
Kids standing up for their school is an awesome thing!
Jessica Oliphant
Well done boys! Shame a few parents and kids had to try and spoil the reputation of the school because they weren’t getting their own way and dictating the discipline policy.
Angela Hall
Well done, how will the school improve if certain disciplines etc are not implemented and adhered to, I’m sure Ms Bacon is doing her best to improve this school and make it a good one for staff, students and parents.
Heather Marie Berry
Very well articulated by two pupils that obviously care about people, life and future.
Paula Harmon
Well done Christian.
Ali Maleney
Well done.
Mike Dunn
Nice to read a balanced view for once.
Lester William Polfus
Well done kids.
Carole Morgan
The two boys that wrote this letter wrote it individually with no parent input whatsoever. It just shows how good the school is if 13-year-olds can write better than some adults can.
Ella Ashurst
Good for the children.
Joan Kilgour
Good for them.

Mmmmm I was thinking there has been a lot of adult input into this letter but I don’t condone violence of any kind maybe the head teacher should explain too about the new rules put into place also. I only know when I went to Nelson Thomlinson school in Wigton in the 1970s I was made to feel like an “outsider” because I didn’t fit into the “correct” socio-economic group. I started off in all the top classes but became aware of favouritism and became uninterested in trying to achieve so was moved out of the top class into middle “”ability” and rebelled big time!
Jacqui Carruthers
I know the lads who wrote it and they wrote it entirely of their own accord, they are very intelligent young men.
Freya Cunliffe
One of the children is my son. He is a very well rounded and extremely capable young man, and needs no input from “adults” to put his opinion and point across.
Kevin Mitchell
My son is one of the boys! The first I knew about it was when he showed me what he had written! So I can assure you no input from me because I slightly disagree with him! I still think some of the new rules are ridiculous but he’s his own man with his own opinions and I’m proud of him.

How does wearing a uniform help in life? Try getting a job in McDonald’s, Greggs, nursing, army, banking (high street), etc without having rules about what you can wear. Some jobs might even specify that extreme haircuts are not allowed. Schools are the first official experience of ‘following rules’ and parents should be helping children follow these rules.
Peter Russell
Kids standing up for the school need applauded.
Gregg Bulman
Well I guess the kids have more sense than the parents.
Julie Irving Barnes
I signed the petition because I think parents should be informed if the kids go into isolation, I don’t agree with the kids throwing and getting abusive but things should be discussed with the school kids and parents.
Mags Nawosad
Need to get rid of the bullies. To me it’s a dead end school... My opinion.
Elaine Mcghee
We all know that this is just an isolated group of parents and children causing issue because they have their own discipline issues at home. Glad to hear that there’s both sides to a story.
Bern Windhow
Gone are the days were the feral kids rule the roost and drag the above average kids down to their level. Well done to the bright kids who are not tolerating the undisciplined half wits. Parents are to blame for the feral kids being punished for “reasonable” guidelines.
Delbert Boomdocker
Well done to both pupils who have given a honest opinion, regarding the ones who cannot abide by the rules then easy option is find another school to take you on but they will still have rules that you won’t like either.
ok thats ok
There are still major issues with pupil discipline at Richard Rose, outside school if not within. Just this morning on Chiswick Street some lads on the way there were giving me lip. It’s not a school I would wish a child of mine to attend.
