Pupils at Lanercost Primary School have adopted Brampton Junction station to give it a new look.

The train station became a project for the pupils who, over the last few months, have taken it upon themselves to make it better to look at for visitors.

It has been spruced up thanks to a colourful mosaic and plenty of flowers.

Just before the summer holidays, they designed the mosaic which shows the countryside around Lanercost with the help of their art teacher Abby, and a few parents.

Alison Clarricoats, headteacher of the school, said: “We just thought it was a really nice way for the children to give back to the community.

“They have really enjoyed it, they have really engaged with the project and they can see that they have made a difference.”

The school and the pupils worked closely with Northern and the Tyne Valley Community Rail Project to adopt Brampton Junction Station.

Their DIY efforts will not end here though, they are already planning other ways in which to make the railway station better.

“It’s a very big station so we’re actually going to bit by bit work on the project and expand what we actually put to make the station nicer,” commented Mrs Clarricoats.
