A WAR memorial with inscriptions of names from both World War One and World War Two has been moved to its new home within the grounds of the local church.

The memorial which was situated outside Abbeytown Methodist Chapel was taken down early in September and earlier this month was rehomed in the grounds of Holme Cultram Abbey Church.

The chapel was put up for sale in 2018 and has recently been sold for £50,000.

The sale led to the owners of the memorial moving it to a new, more accessible place.

Adrian Cozens, property secretary for Wigton Methodist Church, said: “The Methodist Church had sold the chapel and in doing so we felt that leaving it wouldn’t be the best place for it.

“By moving it to the ground of Holme Cultram it remains in a public place.

“It’s a much better place for people to pay their respects and a better place for having the November 11, Armistice Day service.

“This is a more appropriate site.”

The church approached the Parish Council and Diocese of Carlisle to ask permission for the move and it was quickly approved.

The war memorial has an inscription on the front face of the plinth and was enclosed by iron railings.

There are 27 names on the memorial from both wars.

There was also a roll of honour in the chapel that has since been moved to the church.

The memorial has undergone refurbishments and a re-consecration will be on Remembrance Sunday.
