Parliament has been suspended for a short period following a prorogation ceremony.
It will return on Monday October 14, with a Queen's Speech to announce the Government's legislative programme for the new parliamentary session taking place on that day.
Peers were joined by the Commons Speaker and MPs in the House of Lords to hear the formal prorogation announcement read out on behalf of the Queen.
Opposition parties took part in the ceremony, having boycotted in protest last month's ill-fated attempt to suspend Parliament.
The Monarch's speech, read out by the Lords leader Baroness Evans of Bowes Park, set out legislation passed during the parliamentary session and other measures taken by the Government.
