THE co-owner of a theatre group in Cumbria is hopeful that she can take over the running of the popular schools Rock Challenge dance event.

The Rock Challenge is usually held at the Sands Centre in Carlisle each year and is a prominent feature for primary and secondary schools.

Organisers say the event - which takes place across the country - is not generating enough income.

But Wendy Boothman, who runs the Rocket Theatre group, is in talks about taking the event on.

She said: “When I heard that Rock Challenge had been cancelled I was devastated as I know how much the west Cumbrian schools look forward to taking part.

“I organise Big Dance and the Evolution Dance Festivals and I am looking at taking on Rock Challenge as well.

“The west Cumbrian children love Rock Challenge. They get to perform on a big stage and they get to come to Carlisle for the day which is exciting for them. Out west it’s a tradition and it is an awful blow if something like this is to be lost.

“I can assure everyone that if I do take this on it will be a high quality event.”

Rock Challenge usually takes place in March.

Wendy is in the process of contacting schools and hopes to hold a meeting this week.

She said: “I’d like schools to contact me if they are interested in taking part. They can email or go on the Rocket Theatre group Facebook page and leave a message.

A spokesman for the WLA Rock Challenge said: “It is becoming increasingly difficult for local governments and corporations to sponsor and provide for the many events. The predicted generation of funds from sponsorships, fees and ticket sales would likely have been insufficient to produce the events young people have grown to love.”
