A business owner in Workington has been fined £700 after a huge pile of fly-tipping was discovered in the town.
Allerdale Borough Council issued the man with a fixed penalty notice (FPN) of £400 for fly-tipping under section 33(1) (a) of the Environmental Protection Act 1990 and a further £300 for failing in his duty of care under section 34 of the same act.
The prosecution came about thanks to partnership working between the council and its contractor for street cleaning Tivoli, whose staff both reported the fly-tipping and cleared it away within 24 hours of it being discovered.
The fly-tipping was found at the end of last month in the Oldside area.
George Kemp, Allerdale Executive member with responsibility for environmental quality, said: "We take reports of fly-tipping very seriously and this person has rightly been fined. Fly-tipping is not only unsightly but is an environmental health hazard.
"If you are caught fly-tipping, or are identified afterwards, action will be taken against you. I would urge anyone who sees any instances of fly-tipping to report them to the council as soon as you can."
