The next generation of Cumbrian scientists, inventors, engineers and mathematicians will celebrate the explosive launch of a new science centre at Hunter Hall independent primary school.

The Lord-Lieutenant of Cumbria, Mrs Claire Hensman, will open the new centre with a bang, helped by madcap science boffin, Professor Pumpernickel and his science show.

The centre, built as a result of huge fundraising efforts by pupils, parents and teachers over the past two years, is now fully kitted out with Bunsen burners, lab coats and a skeleton affectionately known as Ainsworth.

Britain faces a shortage in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) skills and Hunter Hall head Donna Vinsome is hoping that other primary schools will share the new facilities and inspire the next generation of young scientists.

She said: “We would like the new science centre to be a resource for us and for other schools to come and learn with us.

“I am extremely proud to have a facility like this for our children to be inspired, enthused and to learn in.

“Wouldn’t it be fantastic to think we have a future professor, civil engineer or forensic scientist in our midst?”
