YESTERDAY morning Maryport Inshore Rescue were called by Belfast Coastguard to reports of a person and a dog in the River Derwent in Workington.

Maryport and Whitehaven Coastguards alongside Workington Lifeboat and fire crews agreed on a strategy to get the casualty and dog back to the river bank safely to wait for the Coastguard's and North West Ambulance Service.

A spokesman for Maryport Rescue said: "Maryport Rescue deployed their SRT team members along with a three person rescue sledge which was used to safely get the casualty back to dry land.

"All teams worked together to secure a positive and successful outcome. This type of scenario is what each team trains for, and today proved that training, and local knowledge and the right decisions can give the best outcome to any situation. A very well done must be give to all involved."
