Carlisle’s MP has voiced “great concern” over the way some of his colleagues behaved in the House of Commons in the hours leading up to its closure.

John Stevenson said the rowdy protests staged by some MPs on Monday night as Parliament closed for more than a month were inappropriate for the seat of UK government.

“I have great concern over the way people have conducted themselves in the past week, in the House of Commons,” he said.

“We have to be careful that we don’t start to undermine our constitution, and our democratic practices, and I think that everybody should act in most respectful and appropriate way they can in the Houses of Parliament.

“I think the scenes in the House of Commons did not do our Parliamentary system any favours.”

He repeated his call for a general election.

“We have to have an election as soon as possible. This Parliament is now bordering on dysfunctional.”

Mr Stevenson welcomed the speaker John Bercow’s announcement that he would step down on October 31.

“I think the present speaker has stretched the constitutional rules almost beyond breaking point, and therefore I think it is time we have a new speaker, who acts in a more neutral manner,” he said.

He said his first choice to replace Mr Bercow would be the Labour Party MP for Chorley and current deputy speaker, Lindsay Hoyle.

“He has conducted himself in an exemplary fashion during his time as deputy speaker,” commented Mr Stevenson.
