Increased demand has led to an Egremont school opening a bespoke new nursery unit.

St Bridget’s Catholic Primary School has created the additional nursery space after their intake has consistently risen over the last few years.

And now they are delighted with the end result that has both indoor and outdoor facilities for the youngsters.

Headteacher Suzanne Smith said nursery numbers has increased so much over the last three years that the new unit was necessary in order for them to accept everyone wanting a place.

She said: “We introduced a nursery class in school in 2016 and in this time it has grown beyond how we ever imagined. Last year we realised, if we were to accept everyone wanting to come to our nursery, we would have to expand.

“We have moved the nursery class to a different part of the school where they now have their own unit. It offers the children lots of space to explore the different provision both inside and outside.”

Building work was carried out over the summer holidays after a bid to the Lancaster Diocese was approved for the large build project. The school also contributed ten per cent of the cost from it’s budget.

There are currently 36 nursery pupils at the school who will use the unit, which has an extended classroom, fully-fitted kitchen, private toilets and changing area, lockers and secure outdoor play space with a large sheltered canopied area.

Suzanne added: “We are thrilled with our new nursery unit and I can’t thank everyone enough for all the hard work put in over the summer, especially the final few days, to ensure everything was ready for our first day back.

“As we have more space, we have been able to increase our nursery numbers.

“If anyone would like to come and have a look around they are more than welcome to phone the school office to make an appointment. We now have places for two, three and four year olds.”

In 2017 the school received a good rating from Ofsted inspectors with the early years provision described as being led effectively with children learning rapidly.
