A NEW face will soon be welcoming schools and groups to Carlisle Cathedral.

Sarah Cameron, 27, has been appointed as head of heritage learning - a three year post funded by the Fratry Project.

Sarah’s role will be to scale up and increase the impact of the Cathedral’s learning offer to schools, families, universities and a range of community and special interest groups

Sarah, who has worked at Windermere Jetty, Millom Discovery Centre and Barrow's Dock Museum, has a strong professional background in working on public engagement projects in museum education.

The new post is an integral part of the overall Fratry Project and is funded by the Heritage Lottery Fund grant.

Cubby Construction has been on site at the cathedral since late last year and work is progressing well.

When complete the building will have new spaces for art, music and cultural events. There will also be a new cafe.

Some of the funding for the project has come from the Heritage Lottery Fund with the rest being generously donated by groups and The Friends of Carlisle Cathedral.

The Fratry was built in the 1500s as the abbey refectory, and is home to the cathedral’s collection of 17th and 18th century books, all of which have been carefully boxed up and placed into storage.

The Smirke doorway - which features ornate carvings - will be reverted back to its original position.

It was moved in the early 1800s when a porch was added and the carvings were then seen on the inside, rather than the outside.
