WORK to replace worn paving stones on a street in Carlisle city centre will start on Monday.

The footway improvement works will be carried out on Devonshire Street between Santander bank and Pizza Express.

The work, which is expected to last two weeks, will involve the lifting and replacing of worn paving stones.

A spokesman for Cumbria County Council said in a letter to businesses: "In order to carry out the works it will be necessary to close the footway. The works will begin at approximately 7pm each night and we would hope to be complete by 5am each morning.

"Should anyone want through on an ad-hoc basis, please liaise with the site staff who will arrange an escort through once it is safe to do so, please expect long delays within the working time period."
