THERE are plenty of amazing places serving up a variety of cakes in Cumbria.

This week, we asked readers of the News and Star to share their recommendations on the best places to go for cake in the north and west of the county.

Here - in no particular order - are our readers’ choices.

1: WOODY’S OF FLIMBY, MARYPORT

The cafe, located on Main Street in Maryport, is open six days a week, and closed on Sundays.

Peter Huddart said: “Top quality meals, cakes and snacks.

“[They have] spectacular cheesecakes.

“A real friendly welcome and a diamond in the community.”

Claire Heskett added: “Woody's of Flimby, the brownies are the best and the cheesecake is amazing.”

Emma Atkinson posted: “All delicious cakes and food are homemade by Tina Wood.

“Lovely place to go with family and enjoy having tea and cake while your children play in the child’s play area.

“Extremely friendly, family-run business and also dog-friendly.”

2: COSY CUP, PENRITH

Lorraine Stockdale said: “The Cosy Cup in Penrith, the carrot cake is amazing.

“In fact everything they make is so delicious, super friendly staff.

“It’s our favourite cafe in town.”

Sheila Slee added: “The cosy cup in Penrith has a wonderful selection of cakes and scones.

“Their hot chocolate is yummy and their kids’ menu is really good and the staff are so nice.

“They really do look after you.”

3: SPRINKLES AND SPARKLES, CARLISLE

The bakery, located on Currock Road in Carlisle, was recommended by several readers.

Clair Scott said: “Sprinkles and Sparkles without a doubt. Sharon Callaghan is the best cake maker ever to create cakes.

“Highly recommend Sprinkles and Sparkles.”

Teri Ann Codona added: “Sprinkles and Sparkles bespoke baking, the best by far.”

4: HELVELLYN COUNTRY KITCHEN, GLENRIDDING

The tea room, based near Ullswater at Glenridding, is open six days a week and closed on Mondays.

Christine Robertson said: “The owners Michelle and Jason are so welcoming, everything is baked and cooked fresh.

“Never had a bad cake there.

“It’s cosy and comfortable - you could sit there all day with coffee and cake.

“I highly recommend.”

5: HONEYSUCKLE HOUSE, CARLISLE

Louise Ford said: “Delicious cakes, scones and traybakes all lovingly home baked.

“Fiona will even deliver them all boxed up to your door, also lovely afternoon teas all delivered and set up in your home.”

Michelle Newsham added: “Fantastic afternoon teas delivered to your door, all home baked.

“Even supplies all crockery, cutlery, sets up and collects everything the next day. Can’t recommend highly enough.”

6: THE POT PLACE, PLUMPTON

Located just north of Penrith, several readers have recommended this tea room.

Pat Rogers said: “The Pot Place at Plumpton is perfect.

“Always have a great choice, the lemon meringue is wonderful, and they have gluten free options.”

Ann Allen said: “All homemade and delicious.”
