Delays of up to 20 minutes should be expected between Preston and Carlisle until 6pm this evening.
In a statement published on their website, a spokesman for Virgin Trains said: "A speed restriction is in place due to forecast severe weather between Oxenholme Lake District and Penrith.
"As a result, trains between Preston and Carlisle may be delayed by up to 20 minutes.
"We anticipate disruption will continue until 6pm."
"If you are travelling through the Midlands, please note that there is currently severe disruption."
The disruption referenced is at Rugeley Trent Valley - damaged overhead electric wires has resulted in most long distance trains to and from London Euston being diverted via Wolverhampton, where possible.
